Understanding Medicare DME coverage

What Medicare covers, what it costs, and how we handle the rules.

What Medicare Part B covers

Medicare Part B helps pay for durable medical equipment that's medically necessary for use in the home — walkers, wheelchairs, hospital beds, and more. Coverage depends on your diagnosis, your documentation, and the item meeting Medicare's rules.

Medical necessity & the written order

Medicare requires a treating provider's order plus chart notes showing why you need the item. Some items have extra rules (an in-person exam within a set window, a specific form, or prior authorization). Our smart order form asks the right questions for each item.

Your costs

For covered items, Medicare typically pays 80% of the approved amount after your deductible; you owe the other 20%. If you have a secondary or supplemental plan, we bill it for that 20% — often leaving little to nothing out of pocket.

What's not covered

Some items (such as adult incontinence supplies) aren't covered by Medicare and are simple private-pay purchases. We'll always tell you up front.

For the official rules, see the CGS Medicare DME coverage page.
